The first large-scale photovoltaic power generation project in Macedonia

Elektrani na Makedonija (ELEM), the state-owned power company in Macedonia, issued a tender notice for the construction of the country's first large-scale photovoltaic power plant. The deadline for the acquisition was April 10.
The proposed 10 MW project will be adjacent to ELEM's TPP Oslomej Thermal Power Plant (which produces approximately 10% of the country's total electricity output). ELEM will contribute 10 million euros for project construction, accounting for about 33% of the total investment. Another 67% of the funding comes from the long-term debt of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
The selected developers are expected to start construction in July this year and will be completed within 10 months. The acquisition contract will also include a 36-month operation and maintenance (O&M) service. The bidding will be an e-commerce acquisition through EBRD's Customer Electronic Acquisition Portal (ECEPP).
Elem shows that this project is an integral part of the company's strategy. This strategy aims to keep the company farther away from coal and increase the amount of renewable energy generated to provide clean energy for areas with severe capacity shortages and high proportions of coal-fired power.
Now, Macedonia is still primarily dependent on thermal power. Of the country's total power generation of 1.41 GW, thermal power generation is 842 megawatts, hydropower and wind power are 553.6 MW and 36.8 MW, respectively. The installed capacity of photovoltaics is only 18 megawatts, most of which are distributed generation facilities. Macedonia plans to achieve 28% of renewable energy generation by 2020.
