Virtual Power Plant Test by Australian Operators
Time:2019-04-13   Clicks: 1064
With the increase of home photovoltaics and energy storage, AEMO is inviting some vendors to participate in the demonstration project. Vendors including Sunverge, Sonnen and Tesla are now involved in various ongoing planning VPP projects.

Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) provide electricity and frequency conditioning services to the Australian grid, which will be demonstrated through a new integrated real-world test project.

The Australian government has indicated that AEMO receives funding from AERNA, the National Renewable Power Organization, for A$2.46 million (US$1.75 million) and is conducting a 12-18 month trial.

There are some VPPs in operation or under construction in Australia. Dozens of distributed power systems (DERS), especially home photovoltaic + energy storage systems and industrial and commercial energy storage systems, use batteries and are equipped with bidirectional currents to connect them to the grid. The available capacity of these distributed energy storage systems connected by virtual grid (VPPs) is called according to the needs of grid companies and operators.

That is to say, the grid-side resources will be handled to play a traditional and centralized role in stabilizing the grid, maintaining power security, supply and quality. AEMO will invite pilot VPP projects from Australia to participate in recent exhibition activities, including Sonnen, Tesla and Sunverge world suppliers.

Using this method to handle distributed power (DERs) will enable AEMO to advise on how to formulate appropriate regulatory and operational processes, and ARENA funding will enable market operators to "accelerate the upgrading of AEMO systems and processes, so that VPP can integrate smoothly in achieving business planning."

The reliability of the network has been greatly improved, and the competition among shopping malls has intensified.

AEMO Chief Executive Audrey Zibelman has been Commissioner and chairman of NYPSC and has extensive experience in power market management. This position has played a key role in formulating policies and strategies for the National Reform Motivation Vision (NY REV). Zibelman later joined AEMO in 2017, saying that the latest initiative will prove the value of distributed power integration.

"Australia's power format is transforming into a deeper penetration into customer-grade renewable power generation and storage. Our focus is to build a two-way system to improve the safety and value of the VPP participants and the whole power system. Zibelman explains.

AEMO believes that by 2022, Australia will have up to 700 MW of resources to participate in VPPs. Darren Miller, chief executive of ARENA, said that the National Electricity Market (NEM) is a large planning power market that connects Australia's five jurisdictions and serves about 9 million customers. Such a large planning customer base is also a good opportunity for VPP.

He adds that AEMO will increase exposure through VPPs and will test how it works in stores to maximize customer and system benefits. This experiment will let us know how to better integrate VPPs with larger plans in the next few years. As we move towards a more decentralized power system, VPP will play a very important role in managing customer power assets, such as roof photovoltaics, batteries and other assets such as electric vehicle charging.

"Through VPPs, we can see the improvement of network reliability and market competitiveness, which will eventually benefit all customers."

Use of VPP in other areas: Sunrun, a US home photovoltaic company, recently signed a contract to operate about 5,000 energy storage devices around New England and supply 20 MW of electricity to the grid; Advanced Microgrid Solutions (AMS), a commercial energy storage supplier, recently indicated that in 2018, the company was building VPP in harmony with its own business system and had offered it to a California utility company. Supply 2GWh grid service.
